Following the restoration of this Georgian hall, the brief was to create a romantic, heritage-led garden that felt rooted in the history and architecture of the place. The design needed to reinstate a carriage drive with gates and gateposts, manage existing trees and shrubs, position a future garage, and connect the hall, cottage, paddock, ha-ha and pond without losing the open views to the façade.
My thinking was to balance formality near the house with a softer, more picturesque landscape beyond. Meadow grass and mown paths would draw people through the paddock, while woodland walks, naturalised bulbs and retained fruit trees would give seasonal interest and encourage wildlife. Closer to the buildings, ornamental planting, flagstones, oak doors, light French-style metalwork, a safe Well-feature and subtle lighting add detail without feeling showy. The result is a practical family garden for grandchildren, dogs and everyday use, but with the romance and quiet character the setting deserves.
