Euston Park

Fleetwood, Lancashire

Euston Park in Fleetwood was a public realm and heritage landscape project delivered during my employment at Wyre Borough Council, completed in June 2015. The brief was to renew an important historic space beside the North Euston Hotel, ferry terminal and tram stop, while strengthening its connection to Decimus Burton’s town plan and Sir Hesketh Fleetwood’s original vision. The challenge was to improve levels, paths and planting so the park worked better for everyday public use, without losing the sense of civic identity and maritime history that makes the site distinctive.

BESPOKE FEATURES

My design thinking was to make the park clearer, more welcoming and more memorable. Regraded lawns, improved paths and a generous planting scheme create structure and movement, while topiary, mature Cordylines, shrubs, perennials and bulbs give seasonal colour and resilience in the coastal setting. Bespoke carved benches designed by Stephen Broadbent add narrative detail, referencing lives lost at sea, transport history and Queen Victoria’s visit in 1847.
