Country Garden

Lytham, Lancashire

This Lytham country garden began with a clear brief: create an English country garden that felt at home with the house, while making the whole plot more inviting and usable. The challenge was to connect the patio, conservatory, existing trees and timber garden building with new areas for relaxing, entertaining and productive gardening.

My design thinking was to give the garden a stronger structure, then soften it with naturalistic planting and seasonal detail. A more generous patio leads out to an area with sofas and BBQ area, while a metal fence frames views towards a natural pond with rocks, changes in level and a quiet seat beside the water. Beyond this, improved vegetable beds and a greenhouse add practical purpose. Materials were chosen to feel established and sympathetic, with planting focused on low-maintenance groundcover, spring and summer bulbs, David Austin roses, alliums and foxgloves in purples and pale pinks.

HAPPY CLIENTS

The garden was built by James Fare who ran Great Oaks Landscape Services. On completion the clients said: “What a brilliant job by James and all his team and to Mark Fenton for his inspired design. Cannot recommend these local businesses enough.

Totally overwhelmed by their professionalism, hard work and can do attitude. Thank you!”

The clients are continuing to add to the garden and I was commissioned later to redesign their front garden and driveway area.
