Mount Grounds

Fleetwood, Lancashire

The restoration of The Mount Garden, Fleetwood is another project delivered during my employment at Wyre Borough Council. The centrepiece to Decimus Burton’s plan for Fleetwood; the streets radiate from the Mount Garden and the Pavilion commands elevated views of the town and Morecambe Bay. A Grade II registered park of neoclassical style, with Grade II Lodge and Pavilion, the site is a distinctive and rare example of urban landscape design by Burton dating to the 1840s.

The first phase of restoration was completed in 2016 and included rockeries, a 300m border along the Esplanade wall and pathways. Work to restore the shelters and reinstate 300m of railings was overseen by Research Design. Mrs Doreen Lofthouse generously provided funding for the scheme. The restoration of the buildings and remaining landscape was completed 2021 funded by both the donation from Mrs Lofthouse and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
